Hello, i have a ASUS eee netbook with WIN7 Starter and, when trying to run AOEII, the video plays at a decent framerate, but when going into menu, its framerate drops down to quarter frame per second (4 seconds per frame), i tested all compatiblities mode and killed the explorer.exe task, but still slow.

It's not surprising , really...
Your computer sucks and Windows 7 is way too demanding for your computer. I have a similar computer as well : It's a Dell Inspiron mini 1018 with a Intel Atom 1.6Ghz Mono-core , it came with Ubuntu 12.04. Ubuntu is like Windows 7 : It is bloated and slow and i'm only talking about the graphical environment... I used to have Windows 7 as well and i had the same experience : No matter which game i play , it was always slow and choppy. I tried Crazy Taxi on Windows 7 and DAMN , it was slow as hell !
So what i did ? I installed Windows 2000 , Windows XP and Linux Mint 16. (I plan to install CrunchBang on it as well) I removed Ubuntu/Windows 7 because they were useless on my computer. Then i tried Crazy Taxi on Windows XP , it was much smoother. Then i played the same game on Windows 2000 , i was running it in fullspeed !
I installed Windows 2000/XP from a USB key with a tool called WinSetupfromUSB.(v0.11) Make sure to backup all your data and create 2 partitions with a tool like Easus Partition Master. Then boot your computer with your USB key and follow all the instructions.
You're going nowhere with your computer if you don't do that !

that sounded crazy, my cousin has a worse compruter than me, with win7, and he's running AOEII at fullspeed. Also I dont plan to install another OS :S EDIT: my cousin has the same PC processor.

Additional info: I can run MAME32 fullspeed, Can run Kega Fusion fullspeed (w/32X), including some 3D games released later AOEII. Maybe a DirectX problem. EDIT: DirectX is not the problem

The problem must be the fact that you "Windows 7 Starter" and not the superior ones like "Home prenium" or "Professional". I heard that Microsoft put some restrictions on Windows 7 Starter so may not have full hardware acceleration. Or maybe your integrated graphic card is the problem... Some old games like Sonic Riders cannot run on Integrated cards because they apparently uses some features that do not exist on Integrated GPU or are super Slow ! (using the cpu to generate those effects instead of the GPU) In that case , you should try SwiftShader.

Your computer is actually superior to mine but like i said , it may have nothing to do on how much powerful it is. It's an issue that i encounter sometimes with some old games. (I remember that i couldn't run Empire Earth on it either...) Try to run your game through a virtual machine like Oracle VM Virtualbox.

it isnt always about the processor speed. What you need is more Ram memory. WIth only 1 GB of Ram no wonder everything goes slow. I Recommend going for 2 gb or preferrably 4 gb ram

I Recommend going for 2 gb or preferrably 4 gb ram How many RAM needs Win7+AoEII?? There's no reason to have anything lower than 4 GB on a modern day computer, IMO, as RAM is dirt cheap these days Also, Windows 7 doesn't suck I prefer XP in so many more ways, but that's a whole other topic. Well, let me rephrase that, Windows 7 Home Premium and up isn't bad. Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic are awful, so it's not surprising that you're having issues. Have a brief read: answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/windows-7-starter-what-are-the-limitations/422801d5-89de-494d-8cc1-6f4fc21c2ac0You could also try to speed up your Windows 7 Starter: www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9gYKZmSR4o (use with caution; I've never tested it as I don't have that version of Windows 7) The real solution? Either get rid of Windows 7 Starter and downgrade to Windows XP (make sure you get your drivers for XP prior to wiping the drive), and you should have no issues, or you could upgrade Windows 7 to Home Premium. Upgrading might not even be worth it if your motherboard can't support more than 1 GB of RAM (I can't imagine it wouldn't have at least a 4 or 8 GB limit, but who knows!), which Windows 7 shouldn't ever run on anything less than 4 GB. I would recommend downgrading to Windows XP (or having one of your computer savvy friends or a shop do it for you if it's something you're uncomfortable doing yourself).

Ouch! i watched the video and i found that i cannot do it because i have the Control Panel broken (when i enter, it says something like "Explorer stopped working" and the explorer and the desktop restarts).

Finally , the problem is maybe the OS, AOEII uses only 32MB of RAM while Tzar uses 255MB, Tzar runs at fullspeed while AOEII does not go above 1 fps. Also i got in game, and there were some graphical error (most of sprites didnt have trasparent background). The most strange thing is that when i put the pause menu in AOEII, it runs too fast, having a lot of tearing, but in the rest of the game, it goes very slow. also the music plays at normal speed.
EDIT: i had a conclusion: The OS has problem rendering game's animation (the pause menu did not have animation, the rason of why this menu runs too fast).

Your problem is that you're trying to play a 16 year old game on an OS it was never intended for. AOE2 was released in 1999 for Windows 9x and many games from that era don't work properly on modern versions of Windows due to either using defunct libraries or 16 bit code.
There are a whole pile of known AOE2 specific bugs that prevent it from working on Windows 7. There are a few patches to fix some problems, but not everything. You'd probably be better off buying Age of Empires II HD, which is a modern day remake and runs on modern hardware.
Though you'd obviously need more RAM because 1 GB on Windows 7 won't allow you to do much of anything. I don't know what model of EeePC you have but I think the max is probably 2 GB.
