okay, say this friend i knew were to make a console, coincidently called the "DevSter Drive". this "console" has a 32 mhz risc processor (8 MIPS o shit!!!!, keep reading!), 2kbytes of ram, (now brace yourself) has 128x104 black and white ntsc/pal composite output, 1.5kbytes frame buffer, a 1 tone sound generator, and 20k of program memory, two joypad ports, and one serial port
this so called "console" can run games sent via the computer, or a smart flash card. games for this "console" can be easily made from a basic compiler, coincidently named "BasiEvaXorv", or from assembler
now say if the unit's price is $10 (not including sega genesis joysticks haha), would anyone actually buy this black and white piece o shit, or just rather buy an apple ][? =P (our sales experts here at devster specialties predict a huge market sale of 1-2 units)

So, it's basically a "Hardware-based Super Chip-8 with improved CPU". What components are you using to build it? Maybe it would become more interesting if you added a cheap LCD display, and a rechargeable battery. ;D

yea =P, lol a super chip-8 =D i was planning to make it run something like a clone of wolf 3d . originally, the idea and design came from making a z80 output 24x16 black and white video on a composite monitor, only using a cpu, eprom, and a 8155 (like the riot chip in the atari). i did run pong, breakout, and tetris on it at least =) the only components in the new design are just going to be something like an mps430 from ti, and a video processor chip (2x7400 logic chips). i'm thinking of using dual processors though. and ya got that right =P, the only reason i liked black+white 128x104 is that the lcd modules are fairly inexpensive, and i was impressed with the ones that used no more than 15 ma of power, so i could produce like a portable unit for $30 (labor free of charge ). I could very easily produce color for a tv screen using phase shifts, but i dunno about the lcd (i didn't see any distributors that sold small color lcds in small quantity) because i also wanna run emulation on these too a lot of this is preliminary. my goal is to play something like a wolf 3d clone on a portable console that's dirt cheap . i'm not really gonna "mass produce" thse in my garage and sell 100 of them, i'm just gonna make 2-3 for the price that all the parts cost me. i might not even sell them at all and give them away x.x (=P, seriously )

Nice idea, but don't hire Sega marketing dept if you don't want to kill your console!

hah, i can do better than the department of sega marketing. after 5 sells, the console will be discontinued, and will sell for $1 at the dollar store =P i'm still looking for some cheapo lcd. the lcd i was looking at turned out to be 192x32 x.x which is no good, i didn't know why i didn't spot that before =P. i found a 128x128, one manufacturer makes it, jameco sells it for $50 x.x. The 128x64 lcd's seem to be reasonable at around ~$25. i found one with a white led backlight, and it looks sweet. also, the smaller the resolution, the less vram i need, and the less rendering of the cpu 128x64 is pretty crappy, come to think of it (i mean not pretty). but its black and white anyways, so what do i expect =P

Heh, that's exactly the resolution of a Super Chip-8! ;D Wouldn't the 2kB of RAM be too small for a wolf 3d clone?

yea, with 2k, the biggest map you can get is like 30x30 =P. i started playing around with my gameboy color, seeing if i could port my "sega quickie rpg maker" to "gameboy quickie rpg maker". i'll try to clone some raycasting engine on the gbc first =P, and put this crap console on hold

I had tried to make a GBC raycasting engine some time ago... If you want it, you can get it at members.fortunecity.com/haroldoop/abandproje.html, Search for "Gameboy Raycaster". It's a pretty ugly piece of software, but maybe it could be useful for something.

yea, i'll definitely take a look at that
the last time i coded a raycaster was for some other game's script engine, and that was butt ugly x.x (i could only draw verticle bars, and the width of each verticle bar was 8 pixels =o, while the screen resolution was 320)

Heh, the GBC raycaster would run pretty fast if you used this kind of "optimization". ;D

;D If i wrote the code in ASM this would be 60fps ^^. Because actually , it's in crap C ^^.
I always wanted to see a zero tolerance port to 32x . However, i don't have the skill for ^^.

man, if you played zero tolerance from start to end you'll see that it's nothing to do with doom... ZT is more like jamesbond / CWolfenstein with tons of weapons and levels I learned a new raycasting method (the one used in doom)... I think i'll give another try soon with it... ;D
