386 box supertunning

I turned my 386 on few days ago and it still works !!! makes hell of a noise though... a damn helicopter
I need to find the floppies with sound card utilities...
I ran Doom on it, worked pretty nicely...game started 10mins though :/
its HDDs are too small for nice experiments... 120MB + 40MB... not much... I could fit win95 on it but nothing much more then :/

It's time for... Marika and The Internet, 3rd STAGE!

This time, i didn't used IE (pure evil crap). Not Mozilla too (Firefox and 'SX do not mix). I used Arachne 1.70, a not-so-old web browser for DOS. Despite its limitations (no Web 2.0 features, no JavaScript, no Flash, limited CSS support...), it does a good job rendering most sites. (Anyway, speed still sucks with 6megs of RAM)

Combined with the packet driver of your NIC (mine is a Realtek RTL8019A), it can surf the net without much worries. Unfortunately, i was unable to post to the forum because of some weird bug on Arachne....

Now the pictures! Saki was doing duty as router again, paired with my RAZR (and yes, these experiments are pretty expensive without a data plan), so for the pictures, i used a Sony Ericcson phone...

- My website looks actually better on IE! On Arachne it sucks, but not so bad

... total failure!


- Slashdot sucks. Barrapunto (Spanish Slashdot) also sucks. Same on IE, but with a gray background

Experiment result: 75% sucesss. The goal is to post HERE from a 386, so there will not be a 100% until i manage to get a proper post!

Footnote: Arachne is now GPLed, and new and improved releases are out there. I will give them a try, to find if i can post here without any nasty bug lurking out there...

- I got another IBM DGHS-9LP SCSI drive (another survivor of that AS/400). These drives have a 68-pin SE connector, but my 68-pin card is either dead, or it does not like PCCRAP boards running Linux. However, there are adapters like this one that allows to use such drives with 50-pin cards, like my AHA-1542. Unfortunately, such adaptors are hellish expensive ($35+S&H for a stupid pin adapter!)...

- I had the money to purchase such adapter, however i spent it on a better deal: an Ethernet switch (generic LanPro LP-SW811 made in who-knows, as said on the box) and a bunch of patch cables to plug all the boxes into a LAN. Now i can transfer files to Marika from my laptop without the need of floppies/CD-RWs/transfering the files to Saki and switching cables...

- More Internet experiments were done on Marika: Arachne 1.93GPL is pretty bugged: i can't logon here! And some images look pretty screwed up. Well, i will wait for the next beta build ;D

- Someday i will buy that SCSI pin adapter, and if the DGHS drives are alive and sane, these will boost the storage of my lil' 386: 504Meg -> 9.5Gig! Not bad at all...

- Talking about salvaged parts: in another section of the university, three lonely AT cases appeared: a 286, a Pentium and a IBM 686-something-MX (Pentium clone). So i gathered...
* That IBM processor (PR-200)
* A trio of 44256 RAM chips (useful for VRAM upgrades on ISA videocards, like my Oak OTI-077)
* A bunch of 8Meg SIMMs - useless, but they may be needed in a distant future
* An Analog Devices SoundPort-based ISA soundcard - also useless, but a spare is a spare
* A YE-DATA 5.25" floppy drive from late 1990 - untested!!!
* A couple of hard drives: a 2-gig Samsung WA32xxxx (dead?), and a 10-gig Maxtor (certified IBM part, untested due to my Maxtor ban)
* Some random IDE/floppy cables

* A YE-DATA 5.25" floppy drive from late 1990 - untested!!!
* A couple of hard drives: a 2-gig Samsung WA32xxxx (dead?), and a 10-gig Maxtor (certified IBM part, untested due to my Maxtor ban)
* Some random IDE/floppy cables

50 to 68 and 68 to 50 pin adapters are meant for non-hard drive applications (CD-ROMs, tape drives, dat drives, jazz drives, etc.) You cannot use them on hard drives unless you want horrible rape data corruption.

I have a 68 to 50 pin adapter and tried a hard drive on it which resulted in massive data corruption and made most of the drive unreadable. Do yourself a favor and just buy another SCSI controller.

GiGaBiTe is correct, I have a few of those adaptors and they will NOT work with HDDs.

You basically NEED a SCSI card with 68 pin SCSI connectors for your 386...

With any luck you'll find one that WORKS! ;D

Well, the reseller told me that "it's compatible, it's designed for this class of situations"... Hmmm, another scammer?

Also, the drive has a bunch of jumpers - one of these should handle this situation (wide->narrow SCSI). I will do more research, either for a compatibility report for this drive and my card, OR, another SCSI card (if i can find such a rare monster...)
