I don't know what those signals do (yes, they are signals, not power ), but I wouldn't remove them if I were you. If I were to guess, I'd guess that they're extra signals for the cartridge or expansion port I've removed those two wires on my genesis and everything still works fine, minus the RF modulator, which was broke beforehand. I also have a Sega CD attached to it and it still works.

Broken RF modulator = Feature, not a bug.
I'm planning to remove mine - that spot is a good place for placing more useful mods.

Day 5: RF-OUT? Not in my future ISDB-Tb land I've finally killed that stupid RF box. If you want to kill yours, you only need to desolder the following spots: I didn't know what the heck does that resistor there (it's connecting some line to GND, so it could be a pulldown for some line, and since it's unlabelled on the motherboard, i can assume that it's yet another last-minute Sega kludge), but you should not remove it - before killing the RF box, i've desoldered that lead, and after ending, resoldered it back to place. After attempting to deslolder those fat tabs that hold the box into place, with no results (desoldering those large spots it's a royal pain in the arse, plus my desoldering braid is pure shit, and me + desoldering pump = EPIC FAIL), i got tired of that, and instead, used some cheap brute force... Mmmm... lots of free space Look at the PCB: Sega actually had two models of RF encoders for this motherboard: the small one that i had (made by Mitsumi), and a LARGER brick! Maybe early NTSC RF boxes were even more crappier? Or was it for PAL eurothingies? And talking about RF and composite stuff, i find amusing that my Samsung slim-fit CRT, made in LATE 2007, comes with YUV, but no S-Video! Tiido suggested me to kill the sucker into tiny bits after removal, so i obey that: After reassembling the thing, nothing was malfunctioning, and even better, CompoShit(tm) video is now (slighty) better! So it actually worth the pain... 20% less blurryness And, the mandatory signature - one essential mod that most people out there forget I'm loving it... Next target: ?

Just noticed that my motherboard is a VA6 (TMSS, no "HD Graphics" text, EXT port present on PCB but not installed): www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7796...the last Model 1 with crystal-clear audio Lucky me, i could have got a VA7 with Shit-Dirty audio Here is a full scan of my motherboard, done somewhere in mid-2005, prior to any hacking attempt: (Yep, someone bothered to "pirate" my scan - notice that the filename is in SPANISH, but that's good, since i can save a few megabytes on the hosting bills, and i'm too lazy for reuploading it )

I like the green light though! very cool!

Well, it looks like it was a BAD idea to get rid of the RF shielding: I was experiencing a ground loop between my TV and two of my computers (Saki and that old HP laptop) - i was getting that annoying 60Hz audio hum and rolling bars because the grounding on that HP laptop and my SB Live! is total garbage. After some tracing, the origin of the ground loop was the cable TV coax... and since this is Venezuela, you can't find CATV isolators in any local electronic shops. So i decided to build my own one...But, 75<->300 ohm balums and shield-less Genesis units don't mix, it seems, because when i turn ON my Genesis, i get some mild RF interference on my crappy cable channels - unnoticeable on most channels, but on a few programs it's very noticeable. I don't know who to blame: the lack of RF shielding, the kustom AV cable adapter, the FCC, Samsung (makers of my analog '08 flat-tube TV) or my cable provider. Well, at least the ground loop is no more Crap, and now my shield is in some landfill... Well, at least there is enough aluminium foil at home. It's my pick: TV interference on CATV or ground loops... leading to TV interference in AV inputs! Curiously enough, this Dell laptop seems to be not vulnerable to ground loops - yay for good grounding!

Day 6: LAKABAJO Inside(tm) - part one. Dongles are sooooo enterprisey and sooooo 1980s, so i want mine INSIDE the console. But since i'm all for user-serviceable things, i want pin header connectors and recycled port brackets. While i wait for my GameGenie and the required parts for assembling the ACTUAL adapter, i started to prepare my Genesis for the internal LAKABAJO. First things first - i've hooked up a extension cable right to port 2. Sure, i won't be able to use that port anymore (unless if i unplug the thing), but since i'm a lone gamer, this is a non-issue This time, i didn't made the fat mistake of using fat cables, but still, it was a bit of a pain to solder that ribbon there. After some 30 minutes testing continuity to find any short, but fortunately i got success... A bit of hot glue (a-la-Benheck), some pieces of electrical tape, and it's done. Then, installing the DB25 connector for the LPT cable... Time for some case modding! Unfortunately, while i want my parport plug right at the back, space is at a premium in that area of the console... (n00b mistake: my port extension ribbon turned to be too short!) so this will require some creative PCB design or something Also, the DB25 ribbon is quite wide, making it even more difficult to route the already short ribbon in that place (there is even a screwpost that i'm tempted to remove, but won't do!) Stay tuned for the second part of this exciting mod!

if you havent solved the regulator problems the simple hard answer is replace the old ones new regulators are more effeciant so run cooler. the part that makes the simple answer hard is the soldering wich i think you can handle. oh and you were in here when i was before posting i want to let you know i got a 32X finaly and its one of the models that fails itermitantly but works fine as long as the top is off of it. i was talking about wanting one a long time ago ;D my genny is a little modded no where near yours. i made my ram cart and plan to do some otherstuff to it as well. i may add a harddrive and a loader os with a PICmicro to pretend to be a memory mapper or some extra hardware. if i dont do it someone needs to so now its out there. ;D

sorry i did not notice i skipped page 2. but i did purchase a 2 amp LDO regulator the kind that adjusts the output amps as needed and it does run almost cold i do have a genny MD2 but the old one ran horribly hot. i also have a nomad that i run off a PS1 ac adapter after the upgraded regulator.
