Hi 2 all! I have a Sga Mega Drive 2 and seams I've lost the video cable and can't connect the game to TV set. Can anyone help me with a schematic pinout for this cable 'cos Ican't find it for sell noware... THX! spulber001@yahoo.com

all you need to do is make a cable with rca ends that outputs the video composite data (pin 4), and audio (your choice: stereo, or mono)

I want to make one for my Genesis model 1... i tried with a 32X adapter cable (to create a removable connector) with a cable ripped from a old SNES RF adapter, but all that i got was nothing but some distorted void More details hereEDIT: I rechecked my "adapter" cable: i got mono audio! But i still do not get composite video from it. I tested with the 32X cable adapter, and with the Genesis out connector, but on both i do not got video. Maybe the "sync" line have something to do there? Here is the pinout for the Genesis 1: EDIT: And here is my connection diagram: WARNING: Direct Genesis audio not tested, only through the 32X cable

there could be a possibility that the composite video was not connected in the 32x adapter. i'd check everything with a multimeter though, and i wouldn't go through a 32x adapter =P. i bought plugs to directly connect my genesis 1 to composite video + audio, but had to bend pins around, and remove some pins for it to fit perfectly for me.
there's nothing to getting the composite video output from the genesis onto the tv. composite video is really a direct hook up, so there shouldn't really be much that can go wrong. probably your wires =D

If the composite out is not wired to the 32X... HOW THE HECK can the 32X composite video out be used to get full 32X+Genesis video?

i have gotten the genesis to output video to the tv using only 3 wires use these outputs 5 VDC Audio Mono Comp Video if you have one of those 3 hole rca things on your monitor (video, right audio and left) connect the comp video to the inside of the video connector on the tv, and the 5 volts to the outter ring. for the sound, just plug it into the center of the connector. if you want sterio sound, connect a wire to the sterio l and r pins, and plug them into their respective L and R channels on the tv.

Composite video needs 5V to work? That is weird... will it damage my TV? (was recently fixed due to a power spike that fried half of the CRT stuff) Anyway, i will try it later... first i must look for my wires (i have lots, but not on my house ) EDIT: IT WORKED! The 5V line do the magic! Now i got almost "crystal-clear" picutre. Thanks!... i should write a tutorial later, now i have to purchase an AV cable EDIT2: Connecting video alone: OK, connecting sound alone: OK, connecting both: electric noise, possible TV damage if not disconnected, and Genesis crashes. I fixed this by connecting video 5V line to ground. But after that, sometimes i lost picture. Rechecked my connections (video GND was unplugged), and all is working fine! So... if you want: -Audio only: Audio out+GND on shield -Video only: Composite out+5V on shield -Audio&video: Audio out+composite out+GND on both shields. MAKE SURE TO NOT HAVE ANY FLOATING DISCONNECTED CABLE, this may cause interferences, or maybe, some damage to your equipment. Isolating connections with electrical tape is good too (i made some pins with... staples!)

And here is, my guide to get A/V out with a homebrew cable! (Note that although i made the diagrams using a Genesis 1, and the 32X adapter cable, these are valid too for Genesis 2, just look the tables) Diagram 1: You want BOTH composite video and audio: Diagram 2: You want ONLY composite video, or ONLY mono audio: Notes: 1) In diagram 2, DO NOT USE BOTH CONNECTIONS AT THE SAME TIME, OTHERWISE, YOUR GENESIS/MEGADRIVE WILL CRASH, AND YOUR TV WILL LIKELY RECEIVE DAMAGE!!! In resume, use diagram 1 if you want audio AND video. 2) If you want stereo audio: - From a Genesis 1, use a Stereo Mini-Jack to RCA cable to get stereo from the frontal phonejack. Then, use diagram 2 to get video. - From a Genesis 2, use pins 8,9 and external ring (GND). Same diagram 2 restrictions could apply here, do not use +5V line if you also want video (can anyone confirm this?). 3) Double-check, triple-check and quadruple-check your connections. Isolate it with electrical tape if possible. 4) Have a Genesis 1? Since it is not very easy to put cables in the Genesis AV connector, i suggest to get a Genesis 1 32X adaptor cable from a 32X (preferably from a dead unit, this cable is NOT easy to find!. Instead of inserting the cables directly in the holes, i made some cheapo pins with staples, and then isolated all with masking tape). Otherwise, i think that a standard DIN plug should work (for example, try with one of a dead keyboard, but i'm not sure, you may want to use a multimeter here 5) For the A/V cables, use standard RCA cables (in my case, i used the cable that came with my DVD player). These cables are cheap, and can be found everywhere (can be ripped from broken RF modulators too, but be sure to not swap cables, specially if you are using the +5V line!) And here is my new cable! (v2 improved...) Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, and do not blame me if your expensive plasma TV or your old crappy CRT TV/Genesis X blows when using these adapters!

i don't think connecting +5V to your TV's composite ground is very healthy for the TV x.x. I'm surprised it even works for some people

The Genesis A/V out is a weird thing... If you want only video, it requires the +5V line. Try with diagram 1, and then disconnect one of the RCA plugs: if you disconnect audio, you also lose video, BUT if you disconnect video, audio still can be heard! I've tried with some pirate NESes in the past, and this does not happen. (and of course that it (should) not happens with VHS/DVD players and such devices)
It seems to use a weird logic detection system that checks if the user wants composite video, audio, or both. Can anyone confirm that?

Without the 5v DC connected to the outter ring of the rca video jack, you wont get any picture. i have tried it on my PowerMacintosh G3's AV card, and have left it connected for a good hour or so and no black smoke started pouring out of it.
its also been tested on an ATI All in Wonder 128 Pro, and no problems either. im pretty sure that 5v is standard with all RCA video devices, because if you do the tongue test on the video feed cable, you will notice alot of voltage coming out of almost anything. i need to go find my meter and test the output to make sure though.

there's nothing weird about the audio and composite outputs, and there's no detection system. the cxa1145, or whatever variant is always generating signals for both audio and composite video simultaneously, whether you want the signals or not

I can't still understand the purpose of that 5V line there.
Why the heck i must use it to get only video? Why my TV wants to explode when i use Video+Audio+5V+GND, but runs OK without audio or without 5V?
Anyway, tomorrow i will buy some RCA plugs to make a better cable.
EDIT: New cable done.

some tv's (like mine) have the audio ground, and video ground connected together directly. this probably isn't the same as your tv =P, it'd make your genesis short out if you connected gnd and +5v potential together
if you were to buy a commercial a/v cable, ground is connected to the video and audio shield, not +5v. connecting +5v or ground doesn't matter if you only want one signal (either audio or video) from the genesis a/v.

Damn TV makers, they do not obey standards!
