unless they hacked flicky with a hex editor, that game has some bug that makes it randomly crash at startup. (when it crashes, its just a red screen that does nothing)

How's your Radica flashROM mod coming @oompa_loompa? Any progress yet?

ahahaha after a year, i'm starting this project again now that i have all the components i need! here's a rundown of my portable: - will have 8mB of flash memory for games - 128kB of that flash memory will be allocated for the gui based os - the portable --might-- include a touchscreen with it -> meaning that i can make programs for it such as basic, a text editor, a 68k assembler, and paint! - currently, with my 3.3v switching power supply, i should be getting the current consumption down to 200mA, even with the lcd powered on. I'll be using 8 AA 1.2v nimh batteries to provide power - which should last pretty long - basically everything i said in my original post - oh, i'll add a RTC to the thing too the big thing i'm planning for is the touch screen. it won't work in games, but it'll go very nice with the gui based os. with the touch screen, i can make my portable a programming+painting machine instead of just a game machine because it makes typing in characters so much easier than using the joypad. you'll see me post more on the benheck forums too - if anyone visits those forums this is what i want to put in my portable, but really don't have the parts+space to do it: - mp3 decoder (like the VS1001 or VS1011, but major distributors don't carry this chip. i can buy it from hobbyists from the UK, but it's going to cost me an arm and a leg ~ $50. i might buy it though because having the ability to play mp3's while programming the basic "on the go" is cool) - zigzag wireless (i have the parts, but there's not much room left in my case ) - a secondary micro-controller to control misc. things if anyone can find my a secondary source to buy mp3 decoders (no dsps) with a SPI serial interface, then post here!

found an np3 solution -> ST's STA013 mp3 decoder looks like my portable genesis will be playing mp3's in the background (without 68k intervention) while editting basic programs

Cool. good to see you working on this again. I got one of those Radica's myself last year... 89 cents + $8 S&H. ;D
I might try to make it into a portable as well. Any suggestion on where to find parts, like the LCD, would be appreciated.

i think a lot of people making portables mainly use the psone lcd screen. i heard that it eats up a lot of current, like around 350mA @ 12vdc (way too much for a portable on batteries). the lcd bias supplies can probably be modified/replaced to drain less current, and the CCFL backlight can be ripped out and replaced with a white LED backlight

Thanks for the tips. The LCD is the bigget part of making the Radica into a portable. EDIT: I've decided to try and be a little more fancy... I've got one of these coming in that I plan to try to work my Radica into. DVD/MP3/CD/CD-RW and Genesis games in one handy portable tablet. ;D They run about $100 right now, so even if it doesn't work out, I've got a nice portable DVD/MP3/CD/CD-RW player cheap.

@oompa loompa - on your Radica page, in the "Games that don't work" section you can add...
Virtua Racing
I have a PAL Radica with your SnK MOD and it just crashes when I put my PAL Virtua Racing cart into it...guess this cart needs more signals for it's "Special" S.V.P. chip... ...probably the 13MHz signal...
