fuck psp, it's all about the sgp =D (sega genesis portable, generic name for now)
yes, after getting 3 more radicas (=o got 'em while they're cheap), i had a vision to create a portable. i know people don't like long paragraphs, so i'll list the specs:
- radica sega genesis core 0.o sexiness - case dimmensions: 6.87" x 4.87" x 1.54" - 4" tft lcd screen with sweet resolution for a genesis, and has a flat led backlight. made by innovation, draws only ~240ma. the lcd takes up more than half of the front panel of the case, which is cool because it's psp like =P (psp's lcd screen takes up the entire case almost XD) - 8mbyte on-board flash memory (might make it 4mbyte though) - rs232 interface for communications (would have gone with usb, but all my other projects are rs232 =P) - compact flash slot (to hold games+programs and load to on-board flash) - Amplified mono sound - Uses rechargable nihm batteries - 6-button controller design (i might change it to 3-button because having 6 buttons makes it very compact) - omg, spray paint it orange or bright ass green to knock your socks off - portrait style design - ability to take in composite video+audio for watching dvd's when ya only have the huge ass dvd player and no tv - ability to output radica video+audio to a seperate tv for party party
i don't think anyone's impressed yet, until i take some photos on its progress =P. yesterday, i finished "molding" the case (by molding i mean dremel =P) to make opening for the lcd, buttons, and the lcd grove that makes it all pro-like. i also have taken apart one of my crappy controllers and mounted just joypad (haven't decided what i'm going to do with the button arangement)
so all i need to do is design the schematic for the flash, different interfaces, and charger. not to mention, i'll need to do a lot more work on misc things like mounting stuff
this is just all in response to psp =D. like the psp has memory cards or whatever that holds the games -> mine his compact flash cards that can be something like 128mb that will hold 50 games =P, just keep interchanging flash carts for other games. psp costs like $250 x.x, so the sgp shouldn't cost no more than $50 for the unit itself if i were to use parts i already have

NICE! Sounds like it's gonna ROCK when it's done... ...but when is a good question! We await its creation with baited breath! ;D

hell id just say modify a genesis cart and throw it in a nomad and go from there.
or, just take a 6 button sega controler and mount the screen on the top of that if its not too top heavy.

haha, don't need no book =D, i wrote the book 0o0o
the nomad sucks, and i can't get it anywhere but ebay. ebay is also expensive for nomads too x.x. i could take a controller and mount a tv screen on top, but it'll look all ugly 'n shit. it's better to put it all into a project box and work from there because it looks nicer if done right
progress so far: i put in the ABC buttons from a torn up genesis controller, so now it looks all authentic like a real genesis controller =P, but the casing is flat so it loses its ergonomic style. the start button is a normal round pushbutton, unlike the bar kind. i also made the pcb for the 74act157 "joypad controller", and tested it on the genesis and it works =P. i gotta take a pic of with the lcd mounted and a game playing because you'll all shit your pants =D
also, i've thought of some plans for the os. instead of using my command line interface like i've used for my sega computer, i'm going to make the os all gui like. it's just going to be a simple os where it will read the compact flash and load games from there, write to the compact flasg, and load programs into the 64k left over space of the os for permanent programs, like basic programming, or a calculator, or paint =D
when browsing through ebay to find the cheapest compact flash memory, i stumbled upon an interface that interfaces a wireless network to compact flash. i doubt i can actually get an interface like this to work because the hardware isn't documented, but it shows me all the possibilities for this portable ;D!
i also came up with a schematic for the memory/perpheral board, and it has come out to a max of 5 chips =P, which is the smallest and most compact thing i've done =). i have 1 flash memory chip, 1 uart, 1 uart level driver, and 2 logic chips
i'm going to get a usb cable for my camera phone so i can take pictures whenever i want, and don't need to borrow a digital camera =)

OMFG ITS A SEGA GAMEBOY!
wow thats the best looking invention of jerry-rigged parts i have ever seen you make. cheers!
there are some concerns though, it doesnt have 6 buttons, so you cant use special attacks in games (streets of rage 3) and it doesnt have a select button, or the L and R buttons. but to fit all that on that small thing would be all but impossible.
i would have thought that it would have been easier to make it long and have the controls on the side and the screen in the middle rather than to have them on the bottom.
i want one!
..if it dont cost an arm and a leg.

LOL! "select" and "L &R" buttons...sounds more like a S.N.E.S. pad to me! ;D Surely you mean the MODE button and "X, Y, Z" buttons! Oh, and you can still do special attacks in S.O.R. 3 without six buttons - it's just a combo move like in SF2! Oddly enough, the Radica DOES have support for all 6 buttons, it's just the controller only has 3 buttons... @oompaloompa - if you run SF2:SCE on the radica, you'll see it displays ALL 6 buttons (on a real Genny this would only happen if you had a 6 button pad!) ;D So maybe if there was a way of interfacing a REAL Genny pad with 6 buttons...Hmm...

=P its more like a psp o0o0o ;D!
i would have added 6 buttons, but the ABC buttons would have to be at the very bottem of the case, which would make game play hard XD
i couldn't make it landscape style cause the buttons wouldn't fit in at all. also, for some reason doing it portrait style gives me more empty space inside at the bottem of the case (below the lcd)
want one =P? i could make another one, a lot simpler that'd be easy and cheap to make. it would have plain buttons you find everywhere, and would have a cart port instead of the compact flash and os =D. i'll see what i can do, but for now, i am missing a lot of the major parts to make another
yes, there is a definite way to interface a 6 button joypad, and i've already done this and it works =D. look back at the radica hacking thread on my first post where i posted the joypad diagram. match the diagram i made with a diagram of the genesis joypad on the net somewhere

ehh, you couldnt make it to where you could upload your roms to a eeprom via a usb cable or serial port? that would be awesome. i own a ton of genesis games, but i dont want to have to haul them everywhere, because i have had most of them for more than 7-10 years and they are VERY delicate. i remember accidently tapping my sonic 3 + knuckles lock on once, and it erased all of my saves on there, and it wasnt even plugged in. those saves took me months to do because i only played in 30 minute to hour sessions.
and generic buttons? pff.. ill pay for one IF it looks relatively decent. not to be too demanding here, but i dont want to have to flip a dipswitch twice to make sonic jump.

GiGaBiTe - I think @oompaloompa means just standard push to make switches, no fancy Genny buttons with "A, B, C" on them... @oompaloompa - a link to the Genny pad diagram you did would be useful for other people...although I'll prolly just Google it! ==UPDATE== Googled it already! Genny Controller Pinout... pinouts.ru/data/genesiscontroller_pinout.shtmlAnd the quote from @oopmaloompa:

yea, i thought people could figure out how to hook the controller up themselves since it's not trivial =P. just remember that the genesis controllers accept 5 volts, not 3.3 volts, or else controller won't work
if i do make another portable, i'll make it to my specifications, how readily the parts are available, and how much labor i'll put into it. i won't offer it to just one person, but i'll offer it to everyone to buy

Umm, actually - I tried my U.S.A. (import) Genny 6-button pads on the now 're-wired' Radica joyport... The VCC comes right off the Radica's 3.3v and works fine with Genny pads! ;D (at least on a PSU - dunno about batteries? ) So there ya' have it! Just wondering if it would be possible to add a SECOND joyport to the original Radica - that is before they release the (infinately postponed) dual 6-button version?

there are no traces for a second joypad on the radica, and there's no way to hook one up using your own data ports+chips+stuff =P. joypad should be running at 5 v, but if it runs on 3.3, i guess it's ok (not all joypads will run at 3.3 v, you just got lucky =P)
using batteries should have no difference on the power put out by the regulator =), unless your batteries are dead
