I just picked up an original genesis, so that I could use the Power Base Adapter without removing the housing.
But, what is the purpose of the serial style (9 pin) connector on the back?

on Japanase Mega Drive units, it allowed to plug a special modem for play games through a network (it was called Meganet, if i'm not wrong)

most 1601 Megadrive units has the port. as devster mentioned, its like the controler ports in the front of the genesis. it can be used for the same purpose.
i remember reading something about meganet, and as the article described, it didnt sell very well and eventually bombed out.

There is also some games who output data on this port i think a hard debugger connected to it allows to trace error it's not more than a port 3
