Hello everyone, I'm from Le Monde du CD-i (The World of CD-i) www.theworldofcdi.com and here is an explanation about what it the Philips CD-i.
If you have any questions, I will answer them at anytime.
For more informations, please visit Le Monde du CD-i.
The CD-i is not really a console, but a CD player where you can watch videos, stopped images and sounds. All in a simple 8 cm CD, creating a unique multimedia interaction never seen before in your TV screen. The Format has been developed in an alliance between Philips and Sony, and it's also known by the "Green Book" (the audio CD is the "Red Book" and the CD ROM is the "Yellow Book").
The CD-i (Compact Disc Interactive) have been invented back in 1987 and commercialised near the end of 1991, it's an extension of the CD-ROM, but turned to the domestic consumer.
To make work the disc, you need a CD-i player, this machine could be manufactured (I say "could be" because CD-i is no more manufactured) by any manufacturer respecting the minimal specifications:
Motorola 68000 processor of 15Mhz, 1 MB of memory (RAM), one drive of simple speed, audio and video codec’s, 8 KB of internal memory and the operational system CD-RTOS. If the manufacturer went to add something else, it was himself to pay the components and not Philips.
Here is the different kind of CD the player can read:
CD-i
CD-i Ready
CD Graphics (CD+G)
Video CD
CD Bridge
Photo CD
Audio CD
The CD-i 210 was the best sellers.
The CD-i 450, build to resist the new realized 3DO and Sega CD32.
This CD-i is slighter.
The original idea was to make that children could play educational software, adolescents escape into the games, and adults had possibility to use financial programs, see there favourite movies and use multimedia programs. In theory a very good idea, but who suffer because of the fast implantation in the world market, and about games, Philips is not the best. Before the CD-i launch, the alliance that Philips had with the Japanese games developers as been insulted, that who made that all development responsibility was supported by Philips.
With this, CD-i don't get the chance to get acquaintance games, but "interactive obscure games".
Here is example of very good game!
The frighten "the 7th guest" have been a success in the CD-i beginning live,
principally because of the photorealistic and revolutionaries graphics on this time.
Mad Dog Mc Cree is the game who makes CD-i very famous,
because all the game is a movie.
(CD-i contain more games like this one)
Litil Divil, a side-view with very good graphics.
For me, Mutt (the little sweet red devil)
could be the Philips mascot,
as Mario and Sonic are the Nintendo and Sega mascots.
Solar crusade is the last realized game in the Philips CD-i live.
Dragon's Lair, show the really power of the CD-i in animation.
Secret Mission is the best adventure game that CD-i has in his list.
The lost ride explore the maximum CD-i graphics power.
Micro Machines, the excellent Codemasters game.
CD-i even got Tetris.
Burn:Cycle is an adventure game with video and synthesis mixture.
International Tennis Open has been during years the best tennis game ever made for all console.
In 1991, Philips sign a deal with Nintendo to develop a CD consol support for the Super Nintendo to stand up with the new born Sega CD. The deal have been unmake because of no understanding between the two companies and the rights duty have been gives to Sony the next year (deal cancelled later, and making origin of the PlayStation).
But more interesting, during deal with Nintendo, Philips got the rights to develop Nintendo games.
For the first time in the Nintendo history, Mario and Zelda are created for another console: The CD-i.
Zelda: The wand of Gamelon, in side-view.
Link: The faces of Evil, in side-view too.
Zelda's Adventure, have been created to remember the Nintendo original game (up view)
Hotel Mario, a platform game very funny.
That is clear that CD-i contain others very good games, but if we compare the totally game list with the very good games, we can see that Philips is not the specialist of games creation. The enterprise decides to invest in licensed movies and make Video-CD's. For the consumer be able to see the movies, they must buy a Digital Video Cartridge.
This cartridge is an MPEG-1 decoder.
The most part of the good game need the Digital Video Cartridge.
Here is the Digital Video Cartridge that the consumer must install in is player in a little opening in the machine.
This cartridge is no more no less than a MPEG-1 video chip.
With this, players can see movies, concerts, and play good games in full screen.
The CD-i accessories list is pretty big, so let us tell you the most important material: a commander without wire for the most lazy, some games pad for the players, a gun for the shooters, a roller controller for the children!
Philips try to popularize the CD-i with the creation of some portable CD-i players,
but the high price make that consumers don’t follow it.
With this little marvel you can play games, watch movies and listen audio CD's.
CD-i his better sell in Europe,
there he had the right duty to get internet provided by CD-Online (Web-i in the USA).
Philips Media team downsized their Los Angeles office from 120 people to just 15 in October of 1996 and later, in 1999 Philips has officially stopped the CD-i support and still not advise if he want to start a new version of the console, but we are sure about one thing, Philips don't want to measure with the giants video games makers like Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and Sega.
