There are literally TONS of IDEs out there - I see no reason to do anything beyond command line tools. The type of IDE theloon is talking about is a little different from what you're referring to. He means a complete development solution that includes tile / map / sound editors, common logic functions etc. As oompa said, it's allot of work .. too much work. However, if time wasn't a issue, even cooler would be to have a IDE with a integrated emulator that injects the ROM in runtime after compilation ( and relocates any data in the RAM / VRAM if necessary ) so you could develop on the fly

If I do an IDE, it will be .NET . This is not because I love the language to death, but it's because of the rapid development speed I can get the IDE out. There's also less chances to shoot myself in the foot, compared to other languages where I do make programming mistakes. I know, I like the vb batari . This would be another project on its own, seperate from the actual compiler. An internal emulator is a possibility too. I like the idea of this kind of IDE because it just looks so pretty and cute , and I think it would attract lots of user and attention

I think VB6 would be better though I am biased. Are you saying that an IDE is a possibility?

Oh, no, an IDE is not possible from me right now VB6, and you're going to end up getting something like BEX. If an IDE comes from me, it will be .NET because it's easier, looks nice and shiny, and in the future, 2 years from now when it's released, we'll have better computers to compensate for all the bloated code (and Tom might actually be able to have a core duo when it's obsolete here , and when we have sub 10nm lithography )

I suppose that i will have to run a VM in Linux, or maybe mess a bit more with Mono Java is cool, but it would be somewhat slow (on the other side, you could easily port to... let's say... Android? BEX on-the-go sounds delicious, although i would need a stinkin' Droid first ) VB6 should be execrated, and i agree with that. Noone wants to deal with that shit today. But first things first: we need the core compiler working, and some graphic converter tools (a-la ImaGenesis). These are the two vital pieces on this puzzle. Everything else are just bonus points.

You've been on a core duo, why you still playing with P4's and 486's ? Well get yourself a legal or Chinese version of Windows XP . Forget linux because it's not a priority now. Maybe when the compiler is more mature then yes. Oh, but forget the IDE in linux though, that's a dream . I think people on linux won't like an ide, and will be happy running vim. I still like VB6 though to tell you the truth because I've used it so much in my gui's. It runs smoothly on my 600mhz laptop. I think maybe we can all agree that VB .NET sucks because the language convention is so far away from the original VB6.

Yeah, do it in python before you go .net.

Oompa, I'm sure you have better things to work on, but since we haven't heard anything in 2 years on this topic, I was hoping to hear an update (or a "this project has died") Any news?

I'd love to hear from our Great Leader as well. It sounds like the visual basic source is probably lost. I've found some oooold source code somewhere on Devsters website(s) but that's useless without the visual basic front-end, methinks.
If the project files could be found I'm sure someone amongst ourselves could patch in proper BEX library support. That'd go a long way to improving things.

Last I checked, oompa hasn't logged in since august. I hope he's still working on things, though.

We don't know... can you? We have no idea what your capabilities are.
