recently i've added replaced the 68000 cpu clock selector circuit on my monster sega genesis and now added two more clocks in addition to the stock clock and 13.4 mhz dot clock: 12 mhz, 8.9489 mhz, and 16 clocks. this means that i can now play overclocked games on the sega genesis at 12 and 8.9 mhz without the vdp getting messing up.
now, everyone knows i have like every sega genesis game ever made, like 600 total (only counting the good games =P). so, would it be useful to the community, for me to start making a chart or guide on which sega genesis games overclock the best, and which games perform better on overclocked machines?
i've been spending more time playing my sega genesis games more than any other games because of the new overclocking features =P. some games look sooooooo good on an overclocked genesis, like the road rash series, lotus 2, duke nukem, many other to name

duke nukem for the genesis is total crap. i have never seen a game that looked so good in OpenGL stripped down to something that looks like total shit..
maybe you should finish your SLi code for the 32x SH2's, so you can have a good renderer and port duke nukem (from the pc, since its the good version) to the genesis.
it would be easy, since d3d is opensource already, so you wouldnt have to guess what was what.
the only thing is that the duke3d.grp (that holds all of the maps, sounds, textures, etc) is around 40-50 MB, and i dont know of any genesis cart that was ever created that was that big.

I agree with that, Duke Nukem 3D for the Genesis is total crap: ugly graphics, bad tunes, near-from-impossible gameplay (the most insanely hard game that was ever made for the Genesis!, i had to cheat just for exit the first level, and even with that, the levels are very twisted). What were thinking TecToy guys? If you search on www.3drealms.com, you wil find almost any Duke3D port made ever, EXCEPT the Genesis port! And about the cart size, if you use the SSF2 mapper system, you can have up to 64 512KB pages, making a big total of 32MBytes! More info here. You may want to try with a shareware DUKE3D.GRP, it's quite small to fit there.

i never liked duke nukem 3d for the genesis, the pc version was waaay better (but it was for a pc though, hahaha)

i just looked at that page, you got Mbits and Mbytes confused. they are saying 32 Mbits can be seen by the genesis, and if you do the math, its roughly 4 Mbytes.
32 Mbits / 8 = 4 Mbytes
the full blown version of duke3d will NEVER fit on something that small. thats why tectoy bastardized it so much.
you could although create a SegaCD version of duke3d because it can store up to 650 MB (possibly 700?) but good luck with the 68k synch code, what a nightmare.
theres a sega saturn version that i have seen, although its VERY rare. from the bgm scores i have seen and the screenshots, it almost looks better than the dos version.

dunno about a duke nukem 3d (pc style) on the sega genesis. the genesis is kinda slow for that because i even tried playing duke 3d on a macintosh 68040 running at 25mhz and its way too slow for words. even wolf3d was slow and crappy. i dunno why, it must because the macintosh is a multitasking os

You really need the 32X to do DN3D justice. By the way, I loved the Mac version - I ran it on a 33MHz 040-based Amiga via Mac emulation. It seemed to be a decent speed to me. Maybe your Mac had a lousy video board. Some of those old Macs had some really slow cards - or worse - shared the main memory (much like chip ram on the Amigas).

the mac i have is like a quadra 610 or something. there's no video cards inside, it's all on the motherboard. there seems to be two different kinds of memory inside the system, both are simm modules, but i don't think neither one of them is video memory. the video memory must be shared with the main memory then (like the black+white macs =P)

shared mem? Oh, no, not another SiS!!!

Actually, the 610 wasn't too bad... as long as you had a REAL 040 and not the LC model. The two kinds of memory SIMMs are because one is a VRAM SIMM for the video.
For those not so technically minded, VRAM was special type of DRAM meant for video. You had a normal random access port like regular DRAM, but then you also had a serial port. During an access, you could tell the VRAM chip to transfer an entire memory line (256 to 1024 bits usually) to a big serial register. You could then clock the bits out serially independent of what was happening on the random access port.
This meant you could read/write the video memory at the same time the video chip was reading a display line out the serial port. No contention.

i grabbed myself a system with a real 040 that has the fpu ^_^
in the place i went to buy the 610, there were a buncha other 610's lying around, and this was the best one i picked up (although there were a buncha stickers on it because it was from nasa). the place i went to was a wherehouse, so there was nobody around, and i bagged all the simms from the other machines =D. there's a buncha other stuff i got, like a dozen 65816 cpu's and other rares. it's a good thing i live right by silicon valley =P

Cool. I used to live in Houston, Tx. I could get stuff like magnetic bubble memory modules and plotters for real cheap. I used to drop buy the used electronics stores every weekend. I miss that. Where I am now, I just can't get any of that. I mostly get my stuff online these days. It's not as much fun as walking down the aisles, looking over all the cool stuff you can get.

yea, and online's more expensive than going to the store because you got people that want the stuff too =P

used hardware... i'm a magnet for old PC pieces, i have some dead 486 and 286 boards, dead videocards, old computers working...
And yes, i love to remove caps and resistors with only my teeths

are you serious? with your teeth?
manufacturers coat the leads of electronic components with solder. solder contains a good percentage of lead, which is poisonous! people aren't suppose to toss circuit boards, and tubes in the trash because of the composition of lead, but we all do it anyways =P
